Distinguished and Famous people from Carnarvon
🤝 Thomas Cameron
Carnarvon's 2019 NAIDOC Person of the Year, Wattandee Elder Thomas Cameron, has worked to preserve the history of the Littlewell community near Mingenew. He and fellow community members developed oral histories and a heritage trail, with the site officially opening in 2019. That year he also accepted an Aboriginal Banksia Sustainability Award on the community's behalf. Carnarvon's Gwoonwardu Mia museum team highlighted his work as an example of preserving cultural heritage across the wider region. Littlewell itself is farther south, near Mingenew.
📖 Nene Gare
Nene Gare lived at Carnarvon from 1952 to 1954 while her husband’s public-service career took the family through different communities. The experience later supplied material for Green Gold, one of several memoirs grounded in places she had known. Writing and painting developed together, while observation of poverty and inequality shaped her concerns. Her best-known novel, The Fringe Dwellers, emerged from the later Geraldton years. Carnarvon is therefore a documented home and literary subject, not merely a name appearing on a book tour. The local chapter belongs to the lived experience behind her writing.
🏛️ Stan Parks
Stan Parks served briefly as commissioner of Carnarvon Shire Council after retiring as Fremantle’s city manager in 1983. His earlier municipal career had combined expanded community services with efforts to preserve threatened heritage buildings. From Carnarvon he moved into State housing, urban lands and planning responsibilities. The local association is the particular council appointment, rather than a claim that Carnarvon was his birthplace or the setting for his Fremantle restoration projects. His career illustrates how experience in practical council administration could lead into wider questions of housing and urban development while still including direct work for another regional community.
